Shared Reading Lesson: I Love You More Than Applesauce (Jack Prelutsky)
Goal: Extended vocabulary by fostering word consciousness.
Materials:
-Enlarged copy of the poem.
-Individual copies of the poem.
-Food words on index cards.
Day One:
Introduction
Read the poem aloud to the children, Repeat reading using different voices to create fun and interest (i.e. Sesame Street’s Count, Talk Like the Queen, etc.).
Develop Meaning and Make Connections:
“Turn and Talk” – Turn to your elbow buddy and tell which food you like the best, which would last the longest, which is the sweetest.
Day Two:
Re-read the poem together in an echo read fashion, “I read, you read.”
Ask children to identify the “food words” and underline/highlight them.
Using the food words on index cards and the white easel, as the children to sort the foods that are crunchy or squishy, liquid or solid, sweet or sour. Give the groups a name.
Day Three:
Re-read the poem, asking children to fill in the words as the teacher pauses.
Re-read the poem and “chop the syllables” in each food word. Record the number of syllables above each word.
Writer’s Workshop: Brainstorm a list of animals. Using the poem with pattern blanks, fill in the animal names.
Extension: Challenge the students to use the syllables in each word to help them choose the word for the blank.
